You wouldn't want your readers to leave the article they are currently reading, right? By having your links open in the same tab, you create something called "back button fatigue" — each time a user clicks a link to another page, they have to hit the back button to return to the article they were reading. So set your links (especially external links) to open in new tabs. This will also reduce your bounce rate.
